Secrets of success

Brad Stanton —  May 18, 2013 — 7 Comments

dont-give-upNapoleon Hill interviewed 500 of the most successful people in the world to find out what made them successful. If you are looking for success in losing weight, career, relationships, etc. these help. Here are some of his findings. People who are successful have these traits:

  1. They have a well thought out purpose in life. They know what they want and they believe they can get it. People who aim at nothing hit it every time. Statistics show that from one Harvard class, the 4% who had well thought out goals accomplished more than the 96% who didn’t.
  2. They have ambition to aim above mediocrity. Hill found that people with low ambition don’t get very far in life.
  3. Education. We all know that many of the most successful people had very limited education. Thomas Edison had less than a year of formal education. Bill Gates did not finish college. Ashton Kutcher dropped out of college, as did many, many others. But a college degree can open doors for you, no doubt about it. People are not paid so much for what they know as what they do with what they know.
  4. Self-discipline. Discipline comes through self-control. Hill says that a person must control all negative qualities. That is hard to do, not many really do that well. But the great thing is, if you are willing to do it, you are way ahead of most others. We are both our best friend and worst enemy.
  5. Persistence. Most people are good starters but not good finishers. A person who is willing to keep working at something and not let discouragement deter him will do great things in life. Most people quit when things get difficult, and often quit just before they would have accomplished something big. Persistence overpowers failure.
  6. They don’t try to get something for nothing. They know that in order to get what they want, they have to be willing to pay the price. Or as Zig Ziglar says, “You can get anything you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want in life.”

hugOur beliefs control us

“We live our lives by a set of beliefs, or paradigms, that are always with us. These are beliefs that we have developed over time to help us define the world and our place in it. The biggest mistake we often make is to underestimate the power of our ingrained beliefs and their ability to limit our ideas of what is possible in life. When we set resolutions or goals that challenge these paradigms, we are frequently doomed to failure – yet don’t understand why.” Bob Proctor, from his free email newsletter at BobProctor.com

We believe we will never lose 40 pounds because we have tried and failed in the past.

We believe we will never get out of debt because we can’t see any way to do it.

We believe our marriage will not improve because it hasn’t in the past.

We believe we won’t get that promotion at work, that new house, new car, good health.

Struggling against our beliefs wearies us

Our deepest beliefs are like an automatic pilot on a ship or airplane. It controls which way the boat or our life goes. When you are steering a boat with autopilot, and you don’t want to go the direction it is programed to go, you have to constantly fight against the steering wheel, trying to pull it in a direction it is not programed to go. It tires you out and makes it very difficult to change course.

If our deepest belief says we won’t get out of debt, lose weight or be happy, it is very difficult to fight against that belief. But if we change our deepest beliefs it makes it much easier to achieve our dreams and goals in life.

How do we succeed?

How do we change our deepest beliefs? One way is to use affirmations. I used this method to lose weight during the holiday season. I repeated “I weight x pounds” over and over again to myself. I began to really belief I would lose weight. I began to eat less and kept exercising and I lost weight during Halloween and Thanksgiving, two holidays that normally make me gain weight. Then I decided to splurge for Christmas and gained some back, but I am sure I can use the affirmations again to lose the weight.

When we repeat affirmations, it puts a thought deeply into our subconscious so that we begin to see ways to accomplish the goal. It begins to change our core beliefs so that our brain starts looking for solutions to problems while we sleep and during the day. We start to see opportunities that were there all along, but we just didn’t notice them. It is like driving the same route to work every day and suddenly noticing a house that you didn’t notice before.

Some affirmations

I love my job.

I like myself (this works wonders)

I love my spouse and my spouse loves me.

I weigh xx pounds (even better: I will weight xx pounds by March 20, 2013)

I will get the promotion I am working for by January 2014

Lose Weight

Brad Stanton —  November 10, 2012 — 16 Comments

I suppose we all agree that in order to lose weight we need to eat less and exercise. That seems pretty simple, so why is it so difficult to lose weight? For me, I find there are five keys to losing weight, the five D’s:

  • Desire-first I have to really want to lose weight
  • Don’t doubt (believe you can do it)
  • Dream about it, visualize it
  • Discipline-I have to be willing to eat less and exercise
  • Determined-I have to be persistent and keep dieting even though I occasionally give in to temptation and eat too much.

Desire and Don’t Doubt
It all starts with desire. If you have burning desire to achieve a goal, you probably will achieve it if you believe you can. We have all heard people say “I just can’t lose weight, I’ve tried many times and failed.” Doubt is one of our worst enemies for achieving any goal, something that I write about often in my posts.
Interestingly enough, the secrets for losing weight are pretty much the same as the secret to building wealth. I have read a number of books about how to be successful in relationships, career, health, wealth and life in general. The amazing thing is that they all give the same advice about how to achieve goals. I expected the wealth book to give me tips on which stocks to buy, which real estate to purchase, but most of well-respected books about building wealth give advice about setting goals, desire, belief, visualization, discipline and determination to succeed.
If a person really wants to lose weigh more than they want to eat too much, they will soon begin to eat less. If they want a slender body more than they want the pleasure of overeating, they are on the road to success.
If a person has strong desire they will be willing to work hard to achieve their goal. Arnold Schwarzenegger said that when he was lifting weights to accomplish his goal of winning Mr. Universe so that he could become an actor, that if he missed a workout he felt so badly about it that he actually felt sick. The emotional discomfort of not achieving his daily goal was so strong that the next day he wouldn’t even consider staying away from the gym. That is not to say that we should feel guilty and criticize ourselves when we miss our goal. In fact, that deflates our motivation and starts us in a downward spiral. But if we want something very badly, we just won’t be satisfied if we are not on track to achieve whatever it is we want.
The key to losing weight is to desire the benefits of weight loss, be disciplined enough to exercise more and eat less and determined enough to stick with it for a long time.
Many experts say that instead of dieting, it is best to modify eating habits. In other words, make a permanent change to the way you eat.

Dream
Visualizing yourself slender helps a lot. In his book “Arnold, The Education of a Bodybuilder” Schwarzenegger said that one of the keys to building muscle is visualizing your muscles growing larger. I read his book in the late 1970’s and thought it seemed silly and unbelievable. But now I find that many sports psychologists say it is true. In fact, back in the days of the Soviet Union, visualization techniques for Olympic athletes in East Germany were state secrets because their psychology was so advanced and successful. In those days East Germany won more medals per capita than any other country. US athletes use visualization techniques while preparing for the Olympics. Visualizing yourself at a certain weight will help a lot.
Also, I look at pictures of myself when I only weighed 250 pounds, like in the “about me” photo to remind myself that I can do it. Pictures of your slender self are powerful for bringing about change, this is widely accepted as true by success coaches, it is not just my idea. For more information, search “vision boards” on the internet.

Discipline
I find affirmations are great for building discipline and bringing about change. If you have never used affirmations, you might think the idea sounds silly at first, but I promise you they really do work. Some of mine are:
I weigh 250 pounds (I weigh more than that now, but will reach that weight later)
I don’t like to eat too much.
I enjoy healthy food.
I enjoy the benefits of my slender body.
I say these out loud as often as I need them. In addition, I say “I am happy, healthy, wealthy, wise and good looking.”  (Doesn’t have to be true yet, haha)

Determined
By determined, I mean keep with it, don’t give up no matter what.
Eating healthy food and plenty of fruits and vegetables and drinking lots of water help you lose weight. I find if I don’t get proper nutrition, my body starts to crave food that might be high in calories because I need the nutrition in that food, but it is best to get it in low calorie alternatives instead of junk food. Some fad diets say don’t eat grains, this is bad advice. For decades the experts tell us we need plenty of grains for good nutrition. The problem is that it is easy to eat too many grains and that leads to weight gain.
I find that if I want something bad enough and really believe I can do it, everything else falls into place to achieve the goals and dreams in my life.
So to lose weight, stay motivated! Read motivational books, blogs (including mine), magazine articles. Listen to motivational material as you drive. All it takes is desire (motivation) and everything else falls into place.

I have lost five pounds already and since I have changed my eating habits I know I am losing more weight.

It may sound strange, but love can help you lose weight. If you love having a healthy, attractive body more than you love eating too much you will soon lose weight. If you love the feeling of being slim and not carrying around a heavy backpack of fat, you will soon lose weight.

A man lost a lot of weight by saying affirmations every day (I’m sure he ate less and exercised too). His affirmation was that he weighed 190 pounds even though he was closer to 290 pounds. Every day he said it over and over again: “I weigh 190 pounds, I feel better without the extra weight, and I look better.” As the months went by he lost weight until he did weigh 190 pounds.

I have started saying affirmations and it helps me lose weight. This is not a new idea. Thousands of years ago people were using affirmations. In the book of Joel in the Old Testament, chapter three it tells the weak to say they are strong.

Think about that! God actually tells weak people to say they are strong. It may seem like a lie at first, but it is not. God does strengthen us in every way that we need. We may not be strong the first few times we say it, but the more we say out loud that we are strong, or healthy, wealthy and wise or whatever, the more it will become true.

Losing weight is not that difficult if you can get motivated to eat less every day and exercise regularly. Of course it helps to find out how many calories each serving of food you eat has. Avoid high calorie-low nutrition foods like candy bars, cake and cookies. These add calories without giving your body the nutrition it needs, so you feel hungry.

Drink lots of water. Often I think I want to drink soda or eat food, but if I drink a glass of water, sometimes the craving goes away.

All bad feelings are the absence of love. When we think about things we don’t love, anything that makes us feel bad, sad, angry, jealous, etc. we feel less happy. When we think about things we do love such as our children, a beautiful sunny day, the leaves changing color in the fall, a nice easy chair, etc. we feel happy and it makes us stronger. To get unhappiness, discouragement and other negative emotions out of our mind, fill your mind with good. If you want to get the air out of a glass, don’t use a vacuum pump to try to pump the air out, that is a lot of work and your will never get all the air out. Instead pour something good into the glass, like water. Love flows to us from heaven like water and can fill us with happiness and strength. See John 7
