Archives For Émile Coué

Emile Coue was a French psychologist and pharmacist who is famous for introducing the idea of optimistic autosuggestion. In other words you can change your life for the better by believing and saying affirmations. Actually, the idea had been around for at least two thousand years, but Coue proved that faith, belief, confidence (whatever you want to call it) can do miraculous things for a person. He found amazing things happened if people repeat the affirmation “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.” He was much more successful than other psychologists who didn’t use autosuggestion.

I have found that affirmations help a person lose weight. “Every day I’m getting slimmer and slimmer.” or “I weight (target weight). “I don’t enjoy overeating.”

Coue treated many patients in groups and free of charge.

Coue’s family had origins in French nobility, but was not wealthy. Coue was a brilliant student in school and graduated with a degree in pharmacology in 1876.

He wrote a book called Self Mastery Through Conscious Autosuggestion and it is available free here http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/27203

Coue says “Everyone has heard of sleepwalking; everyone knows that a sleepwalker gets up at night without waking, leaves his room after either dressing himself or not, goes downstairs, walks along corridors, and after having executed certain acts or accomplished certain work, returns to his room, goes to bed again, and shows next day the greatest astonishment at finding work finished which he had left unfinished the day before.”

He says that autosuggestion is “… an instrument that we possess at birth, and with which we play unconsciously all our life, as a baby plays with its rattle. It is however a dangerous instrument; it can wound or even kill you if you handle it imprudently and unconsciously. It can on the contrary save your life when you know how to employ it consciously.”

2000 years ago Jesus sometimes told people “Your faith has healed you.” Matthew 9:22, and other places in the Gospels. I used to wonder why he said it was faith that healed them, why didn’t he emphasize that God had healed them? It may sound strange, but I believe the reason Jesus said this is that it was their faith that healed them. Faith like that takes many months or years to develop, and repeating verses, affirmations every day can help develop strong faith. Picturing the answer to prayer in your mind helps a lot too.

Some who have amazing answers to prayer say you only need to pray once, then start thanking God for it. Thank God over and over for it, that builds faith. Begging God for it weakens your faith. Nancy Goodman overcame breast cancer by thanking God over and over many times a day and watching funny movies. The laughter helped her keep her faith and get rid of worry. Negative emotions poison the body, resisting the natural healing that can occur.

Medicine is good, but many take medicine and don’t get healed. Faith and medicine together are really powerful.
