Leaders are readers

00000000000000000058746Hours of TV watched per week for the typical  American factory  worker (but I’m sure in general the trend is true for everyone):
Assembly line 30 hours per week
person in charge of assembly line 25 hours per week
Foreman (in charge of an area of a building/plant) 20 hours per week
Plant superintendent (in charge of a plant) 12-15 hours per week
President 8-12 hours per week
Chairman 4-8 hours and 50% of it is training videos

The more responsibility the person has, the less time they spend watching TV. One self-made millionaire said that he was encouraged to watch one hour less every day and read instead. He did and now he is rich and famous. Of course he did a lot more than just read, but that is what started it all.

If you are reading this it means that you read more than the average person. It really is true: leaders are readers. Many people read less than one book per year. If you buy a book on CD or MP3 and listen to it on your drive to work and home, you will probably listen to 4 books per month, which can put you in the top percentage of people in the world. If you read/listen to books that teach you how to live your life better or do you job better, you will acquire knowledge that, if put into practice, will dramatically change your life.

Statistics show that 27% of the people in the US did not read a book last year. The Washington Post says:

Who are the 27 percent of people the AP-Ipsos poll found hadn’t read a single book this year? Nearly a third of men and a quarter of women fit that category. They tend to be older, less educated, lower income … and less religious. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/21/AR2007082101045.html

Interesting that people who read less make less money. I guess it is not surprising.

Another idea: 97% want better relationships with family but very few people spend time reading and planning how to improve those relationships.

00000000000000_The_Last_VampireRecently I was in a book store with my teenage daughter (that is not a picture of her lol, but it looks a lot like her because she is half Asian). It seems about half the books for her age are about vampires, and of course the movies are popular too. Where did the idea of vampires come from? Even today in some countries people believe that vampires exist and need to be dealt with. There are some possibilities as to how this all got started.

As a dead body decomposes, gas is released into the lungs and may be pressed out through the vocal chords by the weight of the stomach fat, flesh and ribs, causing a groaning noise to be heard coming from the mouth. A simple wooden casket would not muffle this noise, especially if casket was not yet buried. Can you imagine what it would be like for a mother of a dead child to hear that on the second or third day after the child’s death?

Sometimes caskets were dug up after burial to check for signs of vampirism.

Decomposing internal organs would begin to emit a watery blood which may have been pushed out the esophagus or windpipe and out the mouth, making it look like the person had been drinking blood.

As the corpse decays, the flesh around the fingernails shrinks, but the fingernails don’t. This makes it look like the fingernails are still growing. The same thing happens to the flesh around the roots of the hair, making it look like the hair is still growing. It is understandable that some would believe this corpse was alive, wandering around at night looking for blood to drink.

Movies often show vampires sleeping in caskets. That is understandable because these creatures were found in caskets.

So how do you kill a vampire? Drive a wooden stake through his heart. I suppose that gave a path for the gas and blood to escape without making a groaning noise or being forced up the esophagus, especially if the stake was removed. But even if it wasn’t, the shrinking of the body tissues would quickly leave a gap around the side of the stake, making a path for the gas and blood to escape. No more groans from the corpse or blood on the mouth.

In many countries around the world, for thousands of years people have been drinking human blood for various reasons. Some ancient paintings show victorious troops drinking the blood of their vanquished foes, possibly because they believed it gave them strength. Some drink blood in satanic rituals or other rites; some do it because they think it is cool. Some people actually believe they need human blood for nourishment.

What faith can do

Brad Stanton —  October 7, 2015 — 1 Comment

0000000Matt17 20This is an ancient story with a powerful moral for a better life:

The wife of a dead man cried out to a powerful man, “My husband is dead, he owed money to people. Now they are coming to take my two boys as slaves to pay off the debt.”

The powerful man replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”

“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”

He said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”

She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.”

But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing.

She went and told the man, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

I heard this story when I was young and said to myself, wow, what would I have done if I was in that situation? If I had a lot of faith in what the powerful man said, I would get dozens of empty jars. The more jars I got, the more oil I would get, and therefore more money.

What would you do if a powerful man told you to go get empty jars and fill them from one small jar that you had in your house?

Some would not believe magic would happen, they might get mad at the powerful man and say “Hey, I asked you for money and all you do is tell me to pour out my oil into other jars? What a waste!”

Other people would go to the store and spend every penny they had on jars, and ask every friend for their jars too. Other people would be somewhere in the middle, getting half a dozen jars or so.

What would you do?

Jesus said that if you have faith the size of a mustard seed nothing will be impossible for you. Seems hard to believe, doesn’t it? Very few people believe it. Very few Christians believe it.

I have had the privilege of seeing countless miracles around the world. Seeing all those miracles made me realize there is enormous supernatural power in the world. Some call it magic.

So if you want to be honest about the answer to my question, what would you do if you were that woman, you would look at how you respond to what Jesus said in Mark 9:23 “Everything is possible for one who believes.”  Or John 14:14 You may ask me for anything in my name and I will do it. If you believe these words, you probably would have gotten lots of jars. But if you believe these words, you can still get lots of “jars.” If you have faith, opportunities to do great things for God will present themselves to you. You can not only serve God and help others, but you will be rewarded here on earth and in eternity (forever). If you have a choice between blessings that last forever or last for a short time, pick forever. You are probably thinking, “Duh Brad.”

John 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you

John 16:23  I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

The problem is we have prayed dozens of times, maybe hundreds of times and didn’t see answers to our prayers so we assume the words of Jesus are either untrue or we are misunderstanding them. But stop and think about it. The apostles spent 3 years with Jesus, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It took them that long to develop faith that enabled them to perform miracles. If you think you can spend just 30 minutes with God each day and get that kind of faith in just a few years, you are pretty arrogant. Sorry to say it that way. Faith takes years to develop. But it is worth every single minute of the time it takes to develop faith because Jesus really did mean what he said in John 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

I have seen enough miracles that I can promise you these words are true. When I pray, I see more and more miracles every year.
