The universal mind

Carl Jung coined the term "Collective unconscious"

Carl Jung coined the term “Collective unconscious”

I took a couple of psychology classes in college, which I enjoyed very much. One thing they talked about that I didn’t believe at the time is the Universal Mind or Collective Unconscious. It says that we are all connected somehow, that our thoughts can be connected to each other. Read the comments below this post that people have written about their experiences with this.

After college, I dated a girl who had a strange experience years earlier when she was a child. Suddenly she felt that her father had been killed. Later that evening she was at home and she heard a car pull into her driveway. She looked out and saw it was a police car. She knew without a doubt that the officer would tell her that her father died. And he did.

I believed her when she told me that, because she seemed honest, and because I had heard other people say similar things. But how could she know that her father was killed in a car wreck on the other side of town? The only thing I can think of is that there is some kind of Universal Mind.

Jesus said we are connected to each other and to him, well, Christians are at least, in John chapter 17 and 18. See also Philippians 2:2  1 Corinthians 5:3 1 Corinthians 6:17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

When I was a child I had a close relative who was schizophrenic. She hallucinated about people saying things they did not say. Sometimes she would hallucinate that my sisters and I had insulted her, and she would rail against us in retribution for something we didn’t do. She was very hard to get along with and caused a lot of grief for anyone who was close to her. She was also bi-polar, extremely ADD, BPD, and had early onset Alzheimer’s. As the years went on I began to realize that sometimes when she hallucinated that my sisters and I insulted her when we had not, there was a shred of truth to her hallucinations. If my sisters and I talked about how difficult she was and that she caused us hardships, I might get a call from her later accusing us of insulting her to her face. We had done it behind her back, but she somehow sensed it, even if none of us had spoken with her after we gossiped about her.

Isaac Newton was the greatest scientist who ever lived. He discovered calculus, many ideas in physics, astronomy and other sciences. He claimed that God revealed some of these secrets of the universe to him. At first, his ideas were very well received, but as time went on his discoveries became so advanced that people thought he was crazy. Unfortunately volumes of his work were left unpublished because of the resistance he met. He understood Einstein’s theory of Relativity. He wrote in his Queries “Does not gravity act on light rays and bend it at a distance?” and “Are not mass and energy convertible one into the other?” These are two of the most outstanding ramifications of Einsteins Relativity. Newton discovered F=ma, where F=force, m=mass and a=acceleration. Mathematicians simplify equations to their very simplest forms. But Newton did not write F=ma. He left it in terms of calculus (not simplified) so that it would stand up even to Einsteins Relativity. Newton believed very strongly in some kind of mystical form of the Universal Mind, but he didn’t use that term.

Napoleon Hill studied 500 of the most successful people to find out how they became successful. He studied at least one president of the USA, presidents of large companies, people who had become self-made-millionaires, and other people who achieved all sorts of amazing success. He found that most of them firmly believed in the Universal Mind, in fact they found how to tap into it to learn what they needed to know to achieve success. Seem hard to believe? It is for most people. I certainly would not have believed it if I had not seen some of the strange, amazing things I have seen throughout my lifetime.

Have you, or someone you know ever had an experience like this? I’ve had a number of them. Please leave a comment if you have.

Og-Mandino-Quotes-1Og Mandino wrote The Greatest Salesman In the World in 1968. It was incredibly successful and continued to sell about a million copies a year for 30 years. It is still selling well today. The reason it is such a powerful book is that Og knows how to be successful and teach you how to be successful in anything you do. But more importantly, he teaches how to have a happier life and good attitudes that bring about success.

In the book there are ten “scrolls” or short lessons about how to be successful. All ten are listed here. (click to read them) I have already written about Scroll One in my own words. Here is scroll 2 from Og’s book:

The Scroll Marked 2

I will greet this day with love in my heart

For this is the greatest secret of success in all ventures. Muscle can split a shield and
even destroy life but only the unseen power of love can open the hearts of men and
until I master this art I will remain no more than a peddler in the market place. I will
make love my greatest weapon and none on whom I call can defend against its force.

My reasoning they may counter; my speech they may distrust; my apparel they may
disapprove; my face they may reject; and even my bargains may cause them
suspicion; yet my love will melt all hearts liken to the sun whose rays soften the
coldest clay.

I will greet this day with love in my heart.

And how will I do this? Henceforth will I look on all things with love and I will be
born again. I will love the sun for it warms my bones; yet I will love the rain for it
cleanses my spirit. I will love the light for it shows me the way; yet I will love the
darkness for it shows me the stars. I will welcome happiness for it enlarges my heart;
yet I will endure sadness for it opens my soul. I will acknowledge rewards for they
are my due; yet I will welcome obstacles for they are my challenge.

I will greet this day with love in my heart.

And how will I speak? I will laud mine enemies and they will become friends; I will
encourage my friends and they will become brothers. Always will I dig for reasons to
applaud; never will I scratch for excuses to gossip. When I am tempted to criticize I
will bite my tongue; when I am moved to praise I will shout from the roofs.

Is it not so that birds, the wind, the sea and all nature speaks with the music of praise
for their creator? Cannot I speak with the same music to his children? Henceforth
will I remember this secret and it will change my life.

I will greet this day with love in my heart.

And how will I act? I will love all manners of men for each has qualities to be
admired even though they be hidden. With love I will tear down the wall of suspicion
and hate which they have built round their hearts and in its place will I build bridges
so that my love may enter their souls.

I will love the ambitious for they can inspire me; I will love the failures for they can
teach me. I will love the kings for they are but human; I will love the meek for they
are divine. I will love the rich for they are yet lonely; I will love the poor for they are
so many. I will love the young for the faith they hold; I will love the old for the
wisdom they share. I will love the beautiful for their eyes of sadness; I will love the
ugly for their souls of peace.

I will greet this day with love in my heart.

But how will I react to the actions of others? With love. For just as love is my
weapon to open the hearts of men, love is also my shield to repulse the arrows of hate
and the spears of anger. Adversity and discouragement will beat against my new
shield and become as the softest of rains. My shield will protect me in the market
place and sustain me when I am alone. It will uplift me in moments of despair yet it
will calm me in time of exultation. It will become stronger and more protective with
use until one day I will cast aside and walk unencumbered among all manners of men
and, when I do, my name will be raised high on the pyramid of life.

I will greet this day with love in my heart.

And how will I confront each whom I meet? In only one way. In silence and to
myself I will address him and say I Love You. Though spoken in silence these words
will shine in my eyes, unwrinkle my brow, bring a smile to my lips, and echo in my
voice; and his heart will be opened. And who is there who will say nay to my goods
when his hearts feels my love?

I will greet this day with love in my heart.

And most of all I will love myself. For when I do I will zealously inspect all things
which enter my body, my mind, my soul, and my heart. Never will I overindulge the
requests of my flesh; rather I will cherish my body with cleanliness and moderation.
Never will I allow my mind to be attracted to evil and despair, rather I will uplift it
with the knowledge and wisdom of the ages. Never will I allow my soul to become
complacent and satisfied, rather I will feed it with meditation and prayer.

Never will I allow my heart to become small and bitter, rather I will share it and it will grow and
warm the earth.

I will greet this day with love in my heart. Henceforth will I love all mankind. From
this moment all hate is let from my veins for I have not time to hate, only time to
love. From this moment I take the first step required to become a man among men.
With love I will increase my sales a hundred-fold and become a great salesman. If I
have no other qualities I can succeed with love alone. Without it I will fail though I
possess all the knowledge and skills of the world.

I will greet this day with love, and I will succeed.

Cathy Goodman healed of cancer

Cathy Goodman had breast cancer. She knew faith is important for healing so she kept her faith strong by being thankful for her healing. Every morning and afternoon she constantly said “thank you for my healing.” In the evening she watched funny movies with her husband because laughter has a healing effect. She was healed of cancer without any chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

She had faith that she was healed even before she saw results of the healing. These things healed her: faith, gratitude and laughter.

Jesus often told people their faith had healed them. For example, Matthew 9:22  Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment. I wrote a book about the power of prayer and doing the research for it changed my life for the better.

I am not suggesting that you avoid medicine; I take medicine when I am sick. But certainly there are people who take medicine and continue to get worse. Others combine prayer and faith with their medicine and heal quickly.

Cathy Goodman’s husband

Cathy’s husband, Morris was in a plane crash and was told by many doctors that he would never breathe without a machine, eat, walk or talk again. But he had incredible faith that he could do the impossible. He told himself over and over again to breathe, and as time went on he was able to breathe without a machine. The doctors said it was a miracle. But he didn’t stop there. He decided he would walk out of the hospital by Christmas.

No one believed it at first, because the doctors told him he would never walk again. But he kept the faith, kept believing. He worked hard at physical therapy. There were times when he felt like giving up, times when he didn’t see himself making any progress, but he kept working at it. He pushed himself a little harder each day. He kept working hard and dreaming of success, and finally he walked out of the hospital on his own. Now he can walk, talk, eat, breath on his own, without help from the machines that all the doctors told him he would need.

They can because they think they can

You have heard of placebos. They give a sugar pill to certain people and the real medicine to others in a group. Some people get healed by the placebo. Why do some get healed by placebos? It’s because they have strong faith. I used to think they were suckers. Not anymore. Now I feel they are champions.

Many medical doctors believe that a positive mental attitude overcomes many illnesses. The opposite is also true. My grandmother told me that when she was in the hospital she began to feel depressed. She told the doctor about her feelings and how she wanted to get out of the hospital and go home. He let her go home because he knew the depression was not conducive to healing.

Scientists, religious leaders and most people who have achieved great success in life agree that positive thinking, or faith, is very important.

A woman named Dodie Osteen was battling cancer but she wanted to keep faith in the ability to get well and she wanted to keep a good attitude, so she used what some people call “props.” Props are anything that you can see, feel, touch, taste, etc. that helps you build your faith. She found pictures of herself before she was sick and posted them where she could see them often.  After getting sick she turned a yellow color and lost a lot of weight. If she spent time looking at herself in the mirror, it didn’t help her faith or attitude. Seeing the pictures of herself healthy helped her believe that she could overcome cancer.

She put up a photo of herself riding a horse and having fun doing other things. People prayed for her. Slowly she beat cancer and is healthy now and has been for many years. She did it without medicine, because at the time she had cancer there was no medicine available for her type of cancer.

Faith is the key

Sam Walton, the man who founded Walmart said “If people believe in themselves, it is amazing what they can accomplish.”

W. Clement Stone, who was very poor but became extremely rich by selling life insurance said “Anything the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

Jesus said “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed (very little) you can tell a mountain to move and it will do it. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20 Note: mountain probably meant difficulty, just as in our modern idiom, “don’t make a mountain out of a molehill.” More than three dozen times Jesus said faith is a key to answered prayer.

Bringing about strong, unwavering faith in your life takes a lot of time. One way to bring about faith is to repeat promises (some people call them affirmations). For example, repeat any of the quotes above. Say it out loud ten times every day and it will strengthen your faith. There are many other things you can do to increase your faith. I wrote a book about that very subject, there is way too much information to write in today’s blog, but I plan to add ideas about this to my blog often.

Here is a link so some of the scriptures Dodie Osteen made about healing. Click here for healing scripture from the Bible.

You WILL succeed!

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERAMany people have accepted less than they can achieve in life because it is too much work to achieve their dreams. Many don’t really get what they want and dream about in life because it is just too much trouble to get it. But if God has put a desire in your heart, you can achieve it. When you submit your will to God and his desires are aligned with yours, you know that you are in harmony with him and he will give you everything it takes to achieve your goals.

Many people pray and don’t get what they pray for, so they think, well maybe it wasn’t God’s will. Maybe I shouldn’t ask for what I want. But if your desires are in harmony with God, he wants you to ask for things. What parent doesn’t like giving good gifts to his children?

Many people get discouraged because they have tried and failed, so they quit trying and decide to live in the land of “just good enough.”

When God promised the people the land of Canaan, Moses led them to a land filled with wealth and good things—houses they didn’t build, incredible crops they didn’t plant. It was prosperity and goodness. But they decided that the risk of taking the land outweighed the benefits. They didn’t have faith that God would really give them what he promised. They felt God was a harsh God, who didn’t care about their everyday lives.

In Matthew 25, the story of the talents shows us that if we consider God harsh, he will be harsh to us. The account of Moses and the people show the same thing. All through the Bible, we see that when people did not have faith that God was a good God who loved them and cared about their daily needs, they missed out on blessings.

Many times in the Bible, we are promised that we will prosper if we do certain things. Joshua 1:8, Psalm 1, Deuteronomy 5:33; 6:24: 29:9; 30:1; Proverbs 11:25; 13:21; 1 Kings 2:3.

1 Kings 2:3…and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands… so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go…

What did the word “prosper” mean in ancient Hebrew, the language of the Old Testament? It means much more than just to prosper financially. It means to be successful, to avail, to thrive, to rise. (From Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance)

Don’t give up. Never, never, never give up on the goals and dreams that God has placed in your heart. He will give you everything you need to succeed.

The following is only for people who enjoy the study of languages.

Well, we can be sure of one thing the word “prosper” had a much broader meaning than our English word today because the Hebrew vocabulary was much smaller than English. The entire Old Testament used a vocabulary of less than 10,000 words. The entire New Testament was written with only 6000 different Greek words and many of them were names of people and places.

English is a combination of at least four different languages, it started out as German. Then 2000 years ago the Roman armies brought Latin and Greek. Later, after England was overrun by France, many French words came into the English language. Because of that, we have many words with very specific meanings. It is hard to understand the difference between English and ancient languages if you have never lived in a country that uses an old language. Speak an ancient language for 10 or 20 years and you will have a very keen understanding of the way Hebrew and Greek used words.
