Bad things can bring good results

English: African Hut at Bana, a small village ...

A man was out on the ocean on his boat when a storm came up and his boat capsized. He was able to make it to a small deserted island. He was able to find a few things to eat and some fresh water. Week after week went by. He prayed for help.

As time went on he built a hut out of the branches and thatch he found on the island. Life was difficult there all alone. Loneliness gnawed at him as one day stretched in to the next. He often felt despair.

He kept praying for help to get off the island so he could go back home and see the people he loved. It seemed that nothing was happening.

Then one day as he was out scavenging for food, he looked up and saw smoke rising from the area near his thatch hut. He ran back to find the hut he had worked so hard on for so many days burning to the ground. Now he felt really sad and he cried out to God, “Why God, why did you let this terrible thing happen to me? I worked so hard on that hut and it was all I had.”

In a few hours, as he sat on the beach, he saw a boat coming. It was the coast guard! He asked his rescuers how they knew he was on the island and needed help. They told him they saw smoke and came to see if it was a distress signal.

The thing he thought was the worst that could happen to him actually was a good thing. How many times does this happen in our lives? Something we think is a very bad thing can actually be setting us up for promotion in life.

Romans 8:28 says all things work together for good to those who love God…

  1. This is incredibly truthful! I believe that’s why the bible tells us to rejoice in the hard times! We don’t know why those hard times come, or why “bad” things are hopping in our lives…God does though! His plan is to prosper us, not to harm us, to give us hope and a future…

  2. So true! It’s easy to get discouraged when bad things happen but everything in life can serve a good purpose, like to make us stronger, to show us ourselves, or even turn into serendipity.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. 🙂
