You may have heard this story before, but the idea it conveys is so important that it bears repeating.

There was a boy in a small town who badly wanted to meet an old man who he considered to be extremely successful. He tried one thing and then another to talk to the man, but nothing seemed to give him a chance to talk with the man. Finally he found that the man loved to fish, so he went to the lake every day until he found the old man there.

He told the man that he desperately wanted to talk to him and learn how to become successful. The man said he would share his secret to success with the boy.

“Jump into the water, boy!” the old man said. The boy did, and to his surprise the man held him under water. He struggled to get his head above water for a moment and finally succeeded. Then the man plunged him under water again. This time he held the boy down until he was struggling wildly to come up for air.

He let the boy up and after the child caught his breath he said “That is the secret to success. You have to want to achieve your goal as badly as you wanted to save your life just now.”

It is really true. If you want something badly enough, you will do what it takes to make it happen. If you really want to lose weight, you will. You will enjoy eating smaller meals more than you enjoy overeating. And if you want it really badly, you will feel bad if you overeat, so that next time you won’t want to overindulge. The key is that you have to want it very badly. Not many people want something that badly. But if they do, they will succeed.

Your goals and dreams

Do you have goals and dreams for your relationships, career or life that have not happened yet? Do you sometimes fear they will never come about?

Nothing starts happening until somebody starts dreaming.  Every accomplishment, every book, invention, government, school, etc. started off first as an idea in somebody’s mind.  It started off as a dream, a goal, a vision. If you don’t have a goal, you will probably not make much forward progress. If you aim at nothing, you’re sure to hit it.

OJ Simpson was one of the best running backs in the history of American football. As a child he wore braces on his legs. He once told a pro football player that he would become the best running back in football. When the footballer saw the braces he probably doubted OJ. But OJ had a dream, a powerful goal. He had vision and daydreamed about running the football day and night. As the years went by, he slowly became the best running back ever.

A plan or a desire or wish, without a vision is never going to grow, and an organization’s vision will never be larger than the vision of its leader.  So you as a leader must have accurate vision for your organization.  The very first task of leadership is to set the vision for the organization.  If you don’t set the vision, you’re not the leader.  Whoever is establishing the vision in your organization is the leader of that organization.  An organization will seldom outgrow its vision and the vision of an organization will never outgrow the vision of the leader.

So I want to challenge you to dream great dreams.  One good thing about dreaming is that it doesn’t cost anything.  You can have great dreams and think through and pray through and it doesn’t cost you anything at all.  The Bible says  “God is able to do far more than anything we would ever dare to ask or even dream of, infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts or hopes.” (Ephesians 3:20, Living Bible). God comes along and says, “Think up the biggest thing you think I can do in your life, in your career, in your family and I can top that.  I can help you do better than you thought you could.”

So ask yourself this question, “What would I want to do if I knew I couldn’t fail?  Let that expand your horizons.  Let it expand your dreams.  Expand your vision.  It starts with a dream.

By applying many of the 16 fundamentals of the Law of Success philosophy we have built a great chain of successful stores. I presume it would be no exaggeration of fact if I said that the Woolworth Building might properly be called a monument to the soundness of these principles. – F. W. Woolworth

Dear Mr. Hill: Thank you for your Law of Success. It is great stuff; I shall finish reading it. I would like to reprint that story “What I Would Do if I Had a Million Dollars” in the Business Section of the Public Ledger. – Cyrus H. K. Curtis, Publisher of Saturday Evening Post, Ladies Home Journal

I know that you are doing a world of good with your Law of Success. I would not care to set a monetary value on this training because it brings to the student qualities which cannot be measured by money alone. – George Eastman

I know that your 16 fundamentals for success are sound because I have been applying them in my business for more than 30 years. – John Wanamaker

Mastery of the Law of Success philosophy is the equivalent of an insurance policy against failure. – Samuel Gompers

May I congratulate you on your persistence. Any man who devotes that much time…must of necessity make discoveries of great value to others. I am deeply impressed by your interpretation of the “Master Mind” principles which you have so clearly described. –Woodrow Wilson

My Dear Mr. Hill: Allow me to express my appreciation of the compliment you have paid me in sending me the original manuscript of Law of Success. I can see you have spent a great deal of time and thought in its preparation. Your philosophy is sound and you are to be congratulated for sticking to your work over so long a period of years. Your students…will be amply rewarded for their labor. – Thomas A. Edison

My Dear Mr. Hill: I have now had an opportunity to finish reading your Law of Success textbooks, and I wish to express my appreciation of the splendid work you have done in this philosophy. It would be helpful if every politician in the country would assimilate and apply the 16 principles upon which the Law of Success is based. It contains some very fine material which every leader in every walk of life should understand. – William H. Taft, Former President of the United States and Chief Justice

Whatever success I may have attained I owe, entirely, to the application of your 16 fundamental principles of the Law of Success. I believe I have the honor of being your first student. – William Wrigley, Jr.
