“Most of us are excellent at being self-deprecating, and are not so good at the opposite. Tell us your favorite thing about yourself.” ~Michelle at WordPress

Self-deprecating self-talk is not healthy

I got this daily prompt in an email from Michelle at WordPress. I’m so glad she encourages people to say something good about themselves. Most people are too self-deprecating.  It doesn’t make them a better person, in fact it does the opposite. Most people seem to be better at putting themselves down than building themselves up. Maybe we feel this is the humble thing to do, but it can be very self-destructive. I used to be that way, always putting myself down. Then I read that it makes a person weaker, not stronger when they do this, so I changed my self-talk, and my life is much better because of it.

They say that people who are self-deprecating are more likely to talk to others the same way they talk to themselves.

Toot my horn?

So I am supposed to toot my own horn. OK, here it goes. My favorite thing about myself is that I absolutely love helping people. It makes me happy. I get many comments on my blog saying that a post really made a person’s day better or helped someone solve a problem or feel better about life. I feel so good when I read comments like that.

So as you look through my blog posts, I sincerely hope you will find something that will motivate you or just make you feel happy and optimistic and make you stronger. That is my goal.

Affirmations

I find that self-talk is very important for people to accomplish their dreams and goals in life. Most people achieve far less in life than they are capable of because they don’t believe in themselves. Affirmations can give people the confidence they need to survive the discouragement that derails many dreams. Here is a simple affirmation that I use sometimes:

“I am happy, healthy, wealthy, wise and good looking.”

When I start to feel pessimistic I sometimes use an affirmation from one of the best loved poems in the world:

“Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life…” Psalm 23:6

Speed up computer

1. One of simplest ways to speed up your computer is to turn it off every night. Turning the computer off clears out the RAM so that when you turn the computer on again it will work faster. After playing computer games or viewing lots of photos the RAM is loaded up, I often restart to make the computer run faster.

2. Use good antivirus to protect your computer from spyware which slows it down. Free download from microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/security-essentials-download

3. Free up disk space

  • empty your recycle bin
  • remove temporary internet files
  • get rid of installed programs
  • delete components that you don’t use
  • defragment your disk. When you use the computer, the files get fragmented, causeing it to spend more time searching in different places than if all the file was in the same place on the hard drive.

To speed up your iphone:

First, delete all your text messages. You can go to the Messages app and display lists of everyone you have exchanged messages with. Press “edit” and delete all the conversations.

Secondly, shut down all open apps.

Third, reset your iphone. Hole the Home button down and at the same time press Power with your other hand. You have to press it for 10 seconds or more until the Apple logo appears.

Blog of the day once again

Blog of the day once again (Photo credit: the Italian voice)

Some people get enough blog views to earn over $100,000 per year.

It takes time and a lot of work to get this many readers, but it is possible. Once you get a lot of followers you can sell just about anything on your blog. Amazon has a system that allows you to advertise books on your blog. When people click on the link and buy a book, you earn a small commission like this. You can write a book and advertise it on your blog. One of my favorite blog used to sell advertising. I calculated the owner was making over $10,000 a month selling advertisements on his blog.

1. Write interesting posts.

What do your readers want to read? You can use the number of “likes” as an indication of which posts are most popular. Content is king, good quality, interesting posts are a must to keep people coming back. A good way to write a great post is to find a post you enjoy and rewrite it to your experience. Make the good post even better.

2. Create an interesting “About” page.

Most bloggers get the most hits on their home page, their latest post, and second to that is their “About” page. This page is a great way to tell your readers who you are. Make sure you put your best foot forward. I look through lots of blogs and sometimes find good ideas on their pages that I use on mine, I don’t copy, just pattern it the same.

3. Use a good picture of you.

A head shot is great, but sometimes more than one pic is good. Find a pic of you that presents your personality in the best light. I see some blogs that use professionally done photos and it really appears to be worth the money.

4. Make your posts easy to tweet, email, etc.

You see below my posts are icons you can click on to tweet the post or send it to facebook. If you use a wordpress blog, it is easy to add these. Go to Dashboard, go down the list on the left hand column to “settings” and then click “sharing.” Scroll down in sharing to find the social media sharing icons.

5. Use other social media to draw people to your blog.

Use Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, StumbleUpon and other social media to tell people about your blog. I use http://www.hootsuite.com to post tweets and facebook. You can schedule the tweets and posts to occur at any time, even weeks in advance. There are other sites that offer free software to do this because I often need to spread out my tweets.

6. Make sure you use good tag words that search engines can find.

One professional blogger posted on a method to speed up your iphone, it became one of his most popular posts because people were searching for that on google and other search engines.

7. Post frequently, but not so often that you give up quality.

Some pro bloggers post five times a week. You might see grammar errors in their posts. They are just too busy to proof read all of their posts often enough to make sure the grammar is perfect. But don’t give up quality for quantity.

8. Write post titles that catch people’s attention and make them want to read the post.

There are many good books out there written to teach you how to do it. “Advertising Headlines That Make You Rich” is just one of them. You can go to amazon and read some pages of the book for free.

9. Browse other blogs and click “like” and leave comments.

This tells people that you have a blog. Make sure your gravatar has a link to your blog and the web address.

You can also buy advertising. Fiverr.com, stumbleupon.com, Reddit.com and others advertise for a reasonable price.

1. Believe you can have a great new year
It all starts with belief. No one works hard at any task unless they believe they can achieve it. Many don’t achieve really good things in life because they are pessimistic and just don’t believe great things will happen to them.

“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” ~W Clement Stone

2. Start now
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.” ~Chinese Proverb
Yes, if you had started saving $100 dollars a month ten years ago, you would be much better off today (I realize some readers save more than that), but you can always start now. If your goal is better relationships, start now to work on it. If your goal is to get a raise and promotion at work, sit down and start writing a list of things you can do to accomplish it.

3. Be persistent
Many people start a project, work on it for a few weeks and then forget it. Abraham Lincoln said: “Always bear in mind that your resolution to succeed is more important than any one thing.”
His business failed in 1833. His sweetheart died in 1835, almost destroying him. In 1836 he had a nervous breakdown. Lincoln failed many times to get elected for various different political offices. He was defeated for senate more than once, but finally was elected president in 1860. Not many would stay persistent, but he did and that is one reason he was among the best US presidents in history.

4. Be yourself
You have been blessed with strengths and weaknesses. Focus on your strengths, don’t spend time worrying about your weaknesses. You have a combination of skills that will enable you to do great things. Don’t envy others, they might not be as lucky as you think they are, or as talented!

5. Become better from your failures
I have written a number of posts about using failure to become better. Don’t let failures get you down, they can actually build you up. Colonel Sanders used the failure of a restaurant to begin his Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants that are now in many countries. When he was 65 years old, a new highway took business away from a restaurant he had spent years with. Because of that failure, he was motivated to start something new. Even though he had very little money, he worked hard and accomplished big things. More about this at: http://wp.me/p2rHBL-iP

6. Reward yourself
All work and no play wears you down. If you don’t plan fun things to do and spend time every day relaxing, you will soon run out of steam, or get very bad tempered. Some people plan their work but never plan fun things for their family, causing a lopsided life. You will actually work harder if you reward yourself regularly.

more to come later……..
